Café Mosaic @ Carlton Hotel Singapore

Category : Buffet, International, Promotions

I had my second Christmas buffet gathering at Café Mosaic @ Carlton Hotel Singapore.

This is the first time we’re having our annual Christmas dinner here and the good thing is, Café Mosaic is offering a credit card promotion of 1 dines free with 3 paying diners.

So we only have to pay $51.8 each. Good deal 😀

Café Mosaic’s Christmas offerings weren’t as good as 10@Claymore Pan Pacific Orchard Hotel. I was missing 10 @ Claymore’s Turkey Escalope while digging into Café Mosaic’s Roasted Turkey 😛

Anyway, one of Carlton Hotel’s buffet highlights is their Baby Lobster and here it is on my plate of seafood.

Armed with my fork and spoon, I started to work on my baby lobster and it was just too much effort for a little piece of meat that’s smaller than my fingernail. Next~

However, I have to say, I really enjoyed Café Mosaic’s Tuna Ceviche. It was all gone when I wanted to go back for more 🙁

In its place was Tomato with Cheese which was also awesome.

I was excited to see cereal prawn amongst Café Mosaic’s offerings alas it was not crispy. Most probably because it wasn’t kept warm? Its Fish with Soya Sauce was also quite tough too.

I took a bite out of my friends’ rojak and it was pretty good. Though I would prefer my “you tiao” heated beforehand for that extra crispiness. The option is there but she prefer hers soft so it’s just individual preference.

And last but not least, desserts 😀

Café Mosaic’s tiramisu was great! I would have taken more if I wasn’t so stuffed by now. I enjoyed their Raspberry Cake & Brownie too. The latter was very rich.

How can I forget Carlton Hotel’s Durian Pengat which saw my friend going back for more than a few times 😉 It was okay for me and personally, I still prefer Straits Cafe @ Rendezvous Hotel’s.

We had a great time stuffing ourselves with food while catching up with each other, laughing the evening away. We did notice that Café Mosaic’s surrounding was very loud as we had to raise our voices to make ourselves heard.

But the definitive moment was when my team lead commented that we couldn’t hear my manager’s laughter, which set us all laughing away. Hahaha~

10@Claymore Pan Pacific Orchard Hotel

Category : Buffet, International, Promotions

Time for Christmas feasting again! 😀

Considering my age, thankfully there were only 2 hotel buffet feasting sessions during this Christmas season. Especially since I aspire to try everything at the buffet, as much as possible 😛

First stop, 10@Claymore at Pan Pacific Orchard Hotel.

Thanks to HSBC Credit Card Promotion, we enjoyed 25% off our total bill. This reduced 10@Claymore hotel buffet from S$42++ to S$31.5++. Sweet~

10@Claymore 03

And sweet it was. Wow wow wow at 10@Claymore’s desserts, all nicely decorated with Christmas ornaments. All screaming, “Eat me!”

10@Claymore 35

The shutterbug in me simply couldn’t resist giving each of them a close up shot 😀

10@Claymore 41

10@Claymore 42

I enjoyed most of Pan Pacific Hotel buffet’s desserts except for their shot glass puddings & their durian cake which reminds me of the long brown durian cake/stick/paste. Artificial.

Of course, I’m more demanding when it comes to durian being an unwavering bitter Mao Shan Wang (Mountain Cat) consumer. So my opinion could be biased, similar to my critique of Concorde Spices Café Peranakan Buffet’s Otah.

10@Claymore 39

There were also feedbacks that the yellow & brown layered cake was very sour. It is indeed pretty sour and I kind of enjoyed the slightly torturous sourly kick 😛

10@Claymore 36

Being a tea-lover, Pan Pacific Orchard Hotel really won me over with their Artisan Selection of Gryphon Tea at its buffet. How I wish I could try them all!

10@Claymore 49

I’m usually underwhelmed by hotel buffets’ Christmas seasonal dishes. Hats off to 10@Claymore for winning me over!

For the 1st time ever, I helped myself to a 2nd serving of Christmas Honey Baked Ham!

10@Claymore 09

10@Claymore also has a Festive Season Plates of Pleasure Menu for us to order (repeatedly).

10@Claymore 50

This is the 1st time I enjoyed my Turkey. Their deep fried Turkey Escalope won thumbs up from around the table. Yummy! If only I have space for another serving 🙁

10@Claymore 53

Other dishes I enjoyed were 10@Claymore’s Baked Beer Drumlet & Seared Salmon with Pesto Cream Sauce. Especially the Salmon.

10@Claymore 10

10@Claymore 11

Needless to say, all of us enjoyed our team lunch at 10@Claymore. Their service was also impeccable. We were well taken care of with just the right degree/amount of attention. Their chef even posed for me when he spotted me taking photos 😀

10@Claymore 30

Thanks Pan Pacific Orchard Hotel for the great meal, my teammate for organising and everyone for the great company! 😉

Oh, for sashimi lovers, 10@Claymore has both salmon and salmon tummy sashimi.

Spices Café Peranakan Buffet @ Concorde Hotel Singapore

Category : Buffet, Local Singapore Food, Promotions

Peranakan food isn’t a cuisine type I’m particularly familiar with, and hence not my 1st choice when it comes to food.

So it was really a rare opportunity, for me personally, when our team decided to lunch at Spices Café @ Concorde Hotel Singapore, to experience Peranakan food, buffet style.

Peranakan Buffet @ Spices Café serves up a very different variety of food, compared to other hotel buffets I’ve tried.

Firstly, the usual cold seafood section is absent. No salad either and in its place is a do-it-yourself fruit rojak section. Very interesting~

And (sadly) no cakes either. In its place are local delights like Bean Curd, Putu Mayam, a wide variety of Nonya Kueh and a do it yourself shaved ice machine, with a variety of toppings to customize your very own Ice Jelly and Ice Chendol.

What really got me excited were these little glasses of durian pengat, which instantly brought me back to Rendezvous Hotel and their yummy durian pengat.

I love and miss Rendezvous Hotel’s durian pengat. Alas the higher the expectations, the harder the fall…luckily I only took 1 durian pengat to start off with.

Moving on to the other sections, I enjoyed Spices Café’s Popiah & Kueh Pie Tee. It’ll be even better if the chef could spread more brown/sweet sauce for the Popiah 🙂

Being a huge fan of satay and otah, I personally have very high standards for these 2 items. So not surprisingly, Spices Café Peranakan Buffet’s version falls short, from my point of view. Especially their otah.

However, their main dishes section won me over with quite a few yummy dishes that made me go back for more!

Spices Café’s Lembu Rendang is especially tender and flavourful without any 羊骚味 (I tried translating this online and I almost laughed my head off because it was translated as Sheep Grievance). My best effort translation will be sheep-y, like fishy…Sorry guys~

Spices Café’s Babi Buah Keluak is also superbly marinated and stewed to perfection, tenderness.

Last but not least, the hugely popular Udang Asam. Thumb Up! The prawns are actually black in colour. And they are absolutely delicious. I would have gotten a 2nd helping if they weren’t flying off the plate so fast 😛

Dining Promotion @ Spices Café
For your information, we were there to enjoy the OCBC Credit Card Promotion where 1 dines free with every 3 paying adults.

We were also informed that there is an ongoing promotion for senior citizens, which explains why the restaurant was filled with seniors. We thought there was an event going on 🙂

Peony Jade Keppel Club Chinese New Year Ala Carte Dim Sum Buffet

Category : Buffet, Chinese, Dim Sum, Promotions

恭喜发财!新年快乐!Gong Xi Fa Cai! Happy Chinese New Year!

Are you all prepared for the feastings, gatherings and “interrogations”? 🙂

I definitely enjoy the feastings and gatherings and my 1st Chinese New Year themed event this year is lunch at Peony Jade @ Keppel Club.

Check out this awesome Chinese New Year display at Keppel Club. So festive~

The interior & stage of Peony Jade @ Keppel Club is pretty eye catching as well. I couldn’t resist making my way to the front to take this photo.

Despite having patronized Peony Jade countless times, this is my 1st Ala Carte Dim Sum Buffet @ Peony Jade Keppel Club.

I’ve been meaning to try Peony Jade’s Dim Sum for quite some time now so I’m ecstatic! Plus Peony Jade now has an amazing Chinese New Year Promotion where their Ala Carte Dim Sum Buffet includes Chinese New Year dishes as well.

1st dish of the meal is of course Peony Jade’s Prosperity Atlantic Salmon Lou Hei (Yusheng) with Caviar (发财三文鱼鱼子捞起). I’m not sure about the Caviar but I’m happy with the thick slices of salmon.

The server prepared the Yusheng for us coupled with auspicious greetings and it’s chopsticks action time! We grabbed our long chopsticks and start tossing the Yusheng while chanting our “wishes”. Though it’s mostly “Huat Ah”! 发啊

The portion of Yusheng is huge and we didn’t stop the server from pouring in the entire bowl of oil and sweet sauce so even though the 1st few mouthfuls are nice & crunchy, I quickly get tired of the sweetness of the dish.

So, word of advice, if you aren’t into sweet yusheng, limit the sweet sauce.

Another Chinese New Year dish is Peony Jade’s Hong Kong Style Deep Fried “Soon Hock” Fish with Light Soy Sauce (港式油浸笋壳). We love this dish. Thumbs up. It’s crispy on the outside and yet the fish meat beneath is still moist. Nice~

Back to the theme of Dim Sum Buffet. Yes, buffet. So, we courageously ordered every item in the Dim Sum section, except for one – Fried Raddish Cake with Beansprouts in XO Sauce.

Personally I love the Pan Fried Carrot Cake with Preserved Meat (腊味煎萝卜糕). It’s soft and moist with a nice flavour from the Preserved Meat. I’ll gladly have another serving if there’s space in my stomach 😛

Peony Jade’s Steamed Black Eye Bean Cake with Ham and Radish (蒸眉豆糕) is a different type of dim sum. Maybe I’ll coin it as creative? It’s lightly flavoured with an interesting texture. Maybe some gelatin was added? It’s nice as well.

Peony Jade’s Steamed Har Kau (水晶鲜虾铰) has a relatively thin & translucent skin with 2 juicy &chewy prawns within. Not bad as well.

What’s Har Kau without Siew Mai. Peony Jade’s Steamed Siew Mai aka Pork & Shrimp Dumpling (烧卖) is pretty decent and it’s good that there’s no fatty meat. At least not in the one I devoured.

Peony Jade’s Char Siew Chee Cheong Fun aka Rice Roll (叉烧肠粉) is quite good as well. The Chee Cheong Fun skin is soft and thin. I just wish there’s more char siew 😉

Another dish not commonly found in the category of Dim Sum is Peony Jade’s Hot & Sour Meat Dumpling (京川铰子). This dish has also gotten thumbs up from the table. It has a stimulating spicy flavour 😀

I quite like Peony Jade’s Steamed Beancurd Roll with Black Bean Sauce (豉汁鲜竹卷) as well.

The above 7 dishes are Dim Sum items I’ll order again.

Amongst the other dishes I’ve tried, I wasn’t wowed by Peony Jade’s Deep-Fried Dim Sum selection. And I dislike Peony Jade’s Baked Flaky ‘Cha Siew So’ topped with Chicken Floss (肉菘叉烧酥).

And out of the dishes I didn’t try, Steamed Custard and Salted Yolk Bao (香软奶皇流沙包) drew mixed reviews with comments that 黑社会’s version is nicer.

While Steamed Glutinous Rice in Lotus Leaf Parcel (荷香珍珠鸡) got a thumbs down.

All in all, it was still a nice meal with immense value. We definitely walked away with an immensely stuffed stomach.

Oh I almost forgot, skip the desserts 😉

Christmas Buffet Dinner 2014 @ Marriott Café

Category : Buffet, International

It’s yet another rainy Christmas gathering. The good thing is, Marriott Hotel is just a short dash from the bus stop and for folks taking the train, it’s sheltered all the way from Orchard MRT.

This is the 1st time we’re having our annual Christmas dinner at Marriott Hotel and it’s also one of the priciest so far.

We left our usual haunt, Rendezvous Hotel, due to their slipping standard and last year’s venture at ParkRoyal on Beach Road was a disappointment. I still remember commenting that The Square @ Furama RiverFront Singapore was better and cheaper 😛

Luckily there is an ongoing OCBC Credit Card promotion for Marriott Café where 1 adult dines free with 3 paying adults. So our bill ended up to be $66/pax for 10 of us.

Marriott Café offers a wide selection of food. Even though we were there for 3 hours, I couldn’t stomach eating at least 1 of everything. As usual, I skipped the carbo like the pasta & noodles stations and the Braised Ee Foo Noodles.

They also serve the famous Singapore Chilli Crab which is slightly spicy and won praises from the table, with one commenting “it’s nice the dish is not sweet”. In my humble opinion, all that’s missing is deep fried buns (炸馒头) to soak up the Chilli Crab sauce! My neighbour is also very lucky to land a pincer *envious*

Besides the Singapore Chilli Crab, another dish that is absent from Marriott Café’s Buffet Lunch is these long crab legs which are tackled with scissors to reach the flesh within. From the looks of it, my neighbours definitely enjoyed themselves, if not for the hassle of tackling the shell 😉

I could have easily eaten my money worth by attacking these 2 dishes above but I prefer to keep my hands clean so I stuck to the usual food items which are also pretty good by the way.

My favourite dishes are 1) Fish of the Day (Gluten Free), which happens to be salmon, 2) Crispy Pork Saddle & 3) Roasted Duck. Which is why they were on the 2nd plate of food 😀

I had to try the oyster but it kind of gross me out. And a friend timed it “nicely” to pop by to chat when I was struggling to swallow the oyster…it almost flew out instead of going in 😛

Besides the oyster, I didn’t like the Lamb & Veal dishes either. They have a very strong 骚味.

Last but not least, desserts! No space for everything so, out of the dessert items that appealed to me, I took and really like 1) Cheesecake, 2) Chocolate Log Cake, 3) Strawberry Romanoff (contains alcohol) & Chocolate Mint.

Tiramisu is my all-time favourite cake but Marriott Café’s tiramisu tastes & feels more like sponge cake. Disappointed. Strangely their Panna Cotta tastes more like tiramisu which warrants a second serving!

For tea lovers, here’s a tip. I never realized it but a friend discovered that Marriott Café serves TWG sachets! All you have to do is ask for a cup of hot water and head over to their counter to request for the TWG sachets.

I had the Sencha & Earl Grey flavours and prefer the latter. I have to say though, it’s not as nice as the Earl Grey I had at Here & There Restaurant @ Chijmes.

All in all, our maiden annual Christmas buffet dinner @ Marriott Café concluded on a high note as we headed over to the Christmas tree in the hotel lobby for more photos 😀

Seoul Restaurant Korean Charcoal BBQ Buffet @ Regent Hotel

Category : Buffet, Korean

We’ve heard praises of Seoul Restaurant from a friend who’s been asking us to try the food there since like almost forever hahaha…okay, that’s abit over.

Seoul Restaurant is also known the Regent Hotel Korean BBQ amongst us. So if you’ve heard about Regent Hotel Korean BBQ, this is the one.

Well, today is the day. The only thing that’s missing is…the person who jio-ed us to Seoul Restaurant…

I must say, Seoul Restaurant has a very good range of food for their buffet that is not limited to meat only. This is very different from the other Korean BBQ buffets I’ve tried.

Besides Beef, Pork & Chicken meats, Seoul Restaurant also offers Korean dishes like pancakes, stews & noodles. This is good for folks who go in bigger groups.

More things to try, with the option to alternate between Korean BBQ Meat, free-flow side dishes & Korean main dishes.

As there’re only 3 of us, we focused mainly on the meats. For beef, my friends had B3 – Yangnyeom Galbisal – Marinated Beef Boneless Short Rib in Seasoned Soy Sauce & B4 – Galbisal – Boneless Beef Short Rib. Comments are B3 is very tender while another generally prefers seasoned meat.

For Pork, we had 1 of everything. I quite like P1 – Samgyeopsal – Sliced Pork Belly. It’s nice both by itself and with either the salt & pepper dip or the soy bean paste.

This is also the 1st meat we grilled so I’m not sure if this verdict is skewed as we were quite stuffed towards the end and most of the seasoned meat tasted almost the same, sweet.

We had both the chicken dishes and we preferred C1 – Maewun Chicken – Marinated Chicken in Hot & Spicy Sauce over C2 – Sunhan Chicken – Marinated Chicken in Seasoned Soy Sauce. By the way, C1 is neither hot nor spicy.

Besides meat we had A3 – Haemul-pajeon – Korean Pancake made with Spring Onion, finely chopped squid & prawn and R1 – Kimchi-jjigae – Spicy Stew made with Ripened Kimchi, Pork and beancurd.

Both dishes were okay, a change from the sweet meats. For A3 – Haemul-pajeon, hands down, Joo Mak @ Beauty World is the best I’ve had so far. Plus Seoul Restaurant doesn’t provide the Hae Mul Pa Jeon dipping sauce

After our experience @ Seoul Restaurant, our conclusion is we most probably won’t revisit as we are small eaters. We most probably aren’t eating our money worth. Plus the meat all tasted the same towards the end, sweet. If we’re just talking about meat, I’ll prefer Ssikkek Korean Grill BBQ Buffet Restaurant.

While we were chatting about our lunch, it dawned on us that we’re missing the washed vegetables, raw garlic (ordered & never arrived) and sliced green chilli typically used to wrap the grilled meat in Korean BBQ Restaurants. This most probably would have made a difference in our dining experience.

I later understand that the vegetables + green chilli can be ordered separately from Seoul Restaurant’s A La Carte Menu aka not included in their Korean BBQ Buffet Menu. And it’s not refillable/free flow.

PS: The friend who jio-ed us went for Seoul Restaurant’s BBQ Buffet Dinner on the following day instead. According to him the side dishes were different. There were Pancakes, Kimchi, Octopus/Cuttlefish Slices (Dried), Seaweed, Salad & Sliced Vegetables in Red sauce. And he says that Beef is still the best.

International Buffet at The Square @ Furama RiverFront Singapore

Category : Buffet, International, Promotions

I came to know about the International Buffet here at The Square @ Furama RiverFront Singapore from a close friend when we were discussing where to go for Christmas buffet dinner. She said that the food there was quite good with many varieties.

And best of all, there’s currently a 1 for 1 promotion for almost all major credit cards! This brings down the price for a buffet lunch from $53 per pax to only $26.50 per pax. Cheap cheap! Even their most expensive international buffet dinner is only $34 per pax with this 1 for 1 buffet offer.

Good deal! Assuming you are dining in pairs 🙂

By a twist of fate, we were organizing a farewell lunch this month where our female lead prefers buffet and she gave the go ahead for the international buffet @ The Square @ Furama RiverFront. Please note that it’s Furama RiverFront and not Furama City Centre.

As usual, I attempted to try one of everything I think is worth eating at an international buffet spread aka avoiding carbo. I must say that their food is really pretty decent. It may not have as huge a variety as Carousel – Royal Plaza on Scotts but it’s enough for me. Gone were the days when I can go around the buffet spread for at least 3 rounds *shake head*

I absolutely LOVE their crispy fish skin (yes I went for 2nd serving). It was the crunchiest fish skin I’ve ever eaten and it doesn’t have the unpleasant oily aftertaste.

Their prawns and salmon are also pretty fresh. Well, I enjoyed the salmon here more than at Carousel @ Royal Plaza on Scotts.

A colleague tried their fishball noodles and commented that the noodles were so-so but the fishball is good. Wonder if they have the option of ordering fishball soup?

As a fan of Gui Lin Gao, I was naturally excited seeing it at the dessert table. However the herbal taste was almost non-existent which left me hugely disappointed. In fact I could eat the Gui Lin Gao without the honey. That’s how light the taste is.

Other than the Gui Lin Gao, I like almost all the desserts except for the pistachio flavoured cake which tasted weird & artificial to me. The coffee flavoured sponge cake (I think) and the berries tart were average as well.

I ended my meal on a high note with a bowl of Wintermelon and Chinese Pear with Pork Ribs, cherry tomatoes & the crispiest fish skin ever. Delicious!

All in all, at a price of only $26.50 nett per pax with the 1 for 1 credit card promotion, I give the international buffet spread at The Square @ Furama RiverFront Singapore a huge thumbs up. I’ll return again if there’s still the 1 for 1 credit card promotion 😉

Carousel – Royal Plaza on Scotts

Category : Buffet, International

Buffet time is always guilty time. When we go for buffet, we’ll have a tendency to want to consume as much as possible to make the money worth. Or at the very least try a bit of everything. Yet buffet is always a good place to linger around and/or to cater to different audiences with varying dietary preferences & restrictions.

The latter is the reason why we came to Carousel Buffet @ Royal Plaza on Scotts in Orchard. It’s halal and seems to have a pretty good review online. My 1st impression was really good as we were ushered into a grandly decorated room with exquisite table setting, tall chairs & chandelier lightings. I felt very pampered.

Taking a walk around the buffet that’s spread around the restaurant, there’s quite a good variety and no, I can’t eat a little of everything as my stomach will burst.

My favourite section, the desserts & cakes section looks very appealing as well. For this section, I did try a bit of everything. I liked everything except for the desserts in cups.

The other items I liked were the Baby Squids (I went for 2nd helping), Pan Seared Sea Bass & Sauteed Prawns with Chilli Sauce. *slurp* The raw salmon I took in my 1st plate was too raw/fishy for me. I almost couldn’t finish eating it.

In my humble opinion, Carousel Buffet @ Royal Plaza on Scotts in Orchard is a really nice place with a huge spread that will guarantee that there’s something for everyone. The food’s pretty good too, depending on what you choose to put on your plate 😉

Ssikkek Korean Grill BBQ Buffet Restaurant

Category : Buffet, Korean

I’ve been going to eat at soooo many places that I have a lot of catching up to do on my food blogging. Backlog is one thing. The depressing part is my growing waistline!! Even when I reverted to the “normal” eating routine, my waistline didn’t revert… 🙁

Okay okay, enough whining. Time to return to the main topic. Ssikkek Korean Grill BBQ Buffet Restaurant. This is a simple & straightforward blog post. 2 words. Cheap & Good.

Where else can you find a buffet serving you unlimited meat at a price of only $15+ for lunch and $24+ for dinner? Yes, the keyword is “meat”. If you’re a meat eater, this is the buffet to come to. No service charge. Just dig in.

And because it’s Korean BBQ, it provides fresh lettuce, tomatoes & garlic for us to wrap up the meat into a ball to stuff into our mouths. Korean Style with healthy greens. It also has sides like kimchi, pancakes, seaweed soup, etc.

Of course if you’re only into meat, you can just focus on meat alone. So it’s a good & versatile choice for hanging out with your friends and colleagues.

Upon payment, the owner will also offer to deodorize your clothes with some kind of spray saying “Food nice, smell not nice.” Now, that’s service 🙂

Thanks alot to my dear friend for recommending this great restaurant! *blow kisses*
