Keng Eng Kee Seafood @ Bt Merah Lou Hei 2014

My second Chinese New Year Lou Hei session is with my comrades from university. It’s our once a year affair where we get to catch up with each other over Chinese New Year Dinner.

It’s always nice to have someone organize and take care of everything to keep everyone connected. It’s definitely no easy feat especially since we’re such a big group. So, very much appreciated and salute!

This year we’ve having our annual Chinese New Year Lou Hei at Keng Eng Kee Seafood (琼荣记海鲜) @ Bt Merah which is very near my work place! Nice!

Our reservation is at 7pm and we have to finish eating by 830pm to vacate the tables for the next seating. And all the tables at Keng Eng Kee Seafood were fully occupied that night. Such good business for a zhi char stall! Wow~

Anyway, do not expect much service at an overcrowded coffeeshop.

Well, I fully understand when dishes are rushed out onto the table because Chinese New Year is the super peak rush hour eating time of the year. But spilling things onto their customers with indifference? And the best part is I only knew it when I felt the heat from the sauce! Oh well…it’s a coffeeshop afterall…

Anyway, 言归正传. Food.

The first dish of the evening is of course the Yusheng which is average. But our volume is nowhere near average 😛

Also, check out the orange plates around the Yusheng. This is truly wisdom from a Lou Hei expert. We were told to put our plates around the Yusheng to catch any stray Yusheng that flew off from the main plate. What a great idea!

The food highlight of the evening for me is Keng Eng Kee Seafood’s signature dishes – Coffee Spare Ribs (咖啡排骨) & Hei Zor which is hokkien (I think) for虾枣. Yummy~

We also had Claypot Pig Liver which was quite nice. The liver was cooked just right. The photo I took was blur, so…sorry, no photo.

*Drumroll* The highlight for many people was the crabs. We had chilli crab and salted egg crab. I tried the chilli sauce which was average (plus they don’t have fried man tou which is a no-no for me) and had a salted egg crab claw, thanks to the generosity of my table mates 🙂

Being a lover of salted egg with anything person, I was disappointed with the lack of flavour aka no salted egg taste. There are folks who say that this lighter flavour enables us to taste the crab so it really boils down to individual preference. I for one, prefer to have the strong salted egg taste 😛

All in all it was an enjoyable evening with great company, and economical better than average zhi char Chinese New Year Dinner with a price tag of only S$22 per person whor~
