Café Mosaic @ Carlton Hotel Singapore

Category : Buffet, International, Promotions

I had my second Christmas buffet gathering at Café Mosaic @ Carlton Hotel Singapore.

This is the first time we’re having our annual Christmas dinner here and the good thing is, Café Mosaic is offering a credit card promotion of 1 dines free with 3 paying diners.

So we only have to pay $51.8 each. Good deal 😀

Café Mosaic’s Christmas offerings weren’t as good as 10@Claymore Pan Pacific Orchard Hotel. I was missing 10 @ Claymore’s Turkey Escalope while digging into Café Mosaic’s Roasted Turkey 😛

Anyway, one of Carlton Hotel’s buffet highlights is their Baby Lobster and here it is on my plate of seafood.

Armed with my fork and spoon, I started to work on my baby lobster and it was just too much effort for a little piece of meat that’s smaller than my fingernail. Next~

However, I have to say, I really enjoyed Café Mosaic’s Tuna Ceviche. It was all gone when I wanted to go back for more 🙁

In its place was Tomato with Cheese which was also awesome.

I was excited to see cereal prawn amongst Café Mosaic’s offerings alas it was not crispy. Most probably because it wasn’t kept warm? Its Fish with Soya Sauce was also quite tough too.

I took a bite out of my friends’ rojak and it was pretty good. Though I would prefer my “you tiao” heated beforehand for that extra crispiness. The option is there but she prefer hers soft so it’s just individual preference.

And last but not least, desserts 😀

Café Mosaic’s tiramisu was great! I would have taken more if I wasn’t so stuffed by now. I enjoyed their Raspberry Cake & Brownie too. The latter was very rich.

How can I forget Carlton Hotel’s Durian Pengat which saw my friend going back for more than a few times 😉 It was okay for me and personally, I still prefer Straits Cafe @ Rendezvous Hotel’s.

We had a great time stuffing ourselves with food while catching up with each other, laughing the evening away. We did notice that Café Mosaic’s surrounding was very loud as we had to raise our voices to make ourselves heard.

But the definitive moment was when my team lead commented that we couldn’t hear my manager’s laughter, which set us all laughing away. Hahaha~

Christmas Buffet Dinner 2014 @ Marriott Café

Category : Buffet, International

It’s yet another rainy Christmas gathering. The good thing is, Marriott Hotel is just a short dash from the bus stop and for folks taking the train, it’s sheltered all the way from Orchard MRT.

This is the 1st time we’re having our annual Christmas dinner at Marriott Hotel and it’s also one of the priciest so far.

We left our usual haunt, Rendezvous Hotel, due to their slipping standard and last year’s venture at ParkRoyal on Beach Road was a disappointment. I still remember commenting that The Square @ Furama RiverFront Singapore was better and cheaper 😛

Luckily there is an ongoing OCBC Credit Card promotion for Marriott Café where 1 adult dines free with 3 paying adults. So our bill ended up to be $66/pax for 10 of us.

Marriott Café offers a wide selection of food. Even though we were there for 3 hours, I couldn’t stomach eating at least 1 of everything. As usual, I skipped the carbo like the pasta & noodles stations and the Braised Ee Foo Noodles.

They also serve the famous Singapore Chilli Crab which is slightly spicy and won praises from the table, with one commenting “it’s nice the dish is not sweet”. In my humble opinion, all that’s missing is deep fried buns (炸馒头) to soak up the Chilli Crab sauce! My neighbour is also very lucky to land a pincer *envious*

Besides the Singapore Chilli Crab, another dish that is absent from Marriott Café’s Buffet Lunch is these long crab legs which are tackled with scissors to reach the flesh within. From the looks of it, my neighbours definitely enjoyed themselves, if not for the hassle of tackling the shell 😉

I could have easily eaten my money worth by attacking these 2 dishes above but I prefer to keep my hands clean so I stuck to the usual food items which are also pretty good by the way.

My favourite dishes are 1) Fish of the Day (Gluten Free), which happens to be salmon, 2) Crispy Pork Saddle & 3) Roasted Duck. Which is why they were on the 2nd plate of food 😀

I had to try the oyster but it kind of gross me out. And a friend timed it “nicely” to pop by to chat when I was struggling to swallow the oyster…it almost flew out instead of going in 😛

Besides the oyster, I didn’t like the Lamb & Veal dishes either. They have a very strong 骚味.

Last but not least, desserts! No space for everything so, out of the dessert items that appealed to me, I took and really like 1) Cheesecake, 2) Chocolate Log Cake, 3) Strawberry Romanoff (contains alcohol) & Chocolate Mint.

Tiramisu is my all-time favourite cake but Marriott Café’s tiramisu tastes & feels more like sponge cake. Disappointed. Strangely their Panna Cotta tastes more like tiramisu which warrants a second serving!

For tea lovers, here’s a tip. I never realized it but a friend discovered that Marriott Café serves TWG sachets! All you have to do is ask for a cup of hot water and head over to their counter to request for the TWG sachets.

I had the Sencha & Earl Grey flavours and prefer the latter. I have to say though, it’s not as nice as the Earl Grey I had at Here & There Restaurant @ Chijmes.

All in all, our maiden annual Christmas buffet dinner @ Marriott Café concluded on a high note as we headed over to the Christmas tree in the hotel lobby for more photos 😀

Paradise Dynasty Szechuan Dishes Promotion

Category : Chinese, Promotions

I’m addicted! I can’t stop thinking about these yummy Szechuan dishes we had at Paradise Dynasty ever since we chanced upon their 30% off promotion for OCBC Cardholders and Paradise Gourmet Rewards members.

Also of course because they’re at such a steal!

I’ve already enjoyed these 30% off Szechuan dishes four times times and am thinking whether to have it one last time, before the promotion ends on 30 Dec 2014.

The 30% discount promotion is for Paradise Dynasty’s La Mian with Poached Marbled Beef in Szechuan Style, Poached Sliced Fish in Szechuan Chilli Oil, Pork Dumpling with Hot Chilli Vinaigrette, Steamed Szechuan Xiao Long Bao & Spicy Szechuan Crispy Chicken.

I’ve tried everything except for the first dish. And all I like 🙂

First up, and the most exciting dish of all – Poached Sliced Fish in Szechuan Chilli Oil (四川水煮鱼) @ S$14.56. Check out this enormous bowl of Soup/Chilli Oil!

I was too busy eating and gasping for air from the spice to take photos of what’s underneath this sea of chili. Sorry~ But there are sliced fish, glass noodles, big bean sprouts, black fungus & flat strips of dried tofu. This dish alone can feed 2 ladies.

You can choose your preferred spice level of 1 – 3 chillis. I had 2 chillis on every visit. Though we suspect we might have been served 3 chillis on one occasion as it was especially hot & spicy! Though very shiok, we had to order iced barley drinks to continue~

Next is Pork Dumpling with Hot Chilli Vinaigrette (红油抄手) @ S$4.48. I’ve liked this dish ever since trying it at Din Tai Fung (鼎泰丰). I didn’t quite like this dish at Crystal Jade (翡翠) but this one here, at Paradise Dynasty, is my favourite of them all. Its skin isn’t too thick, the sauce is nice and the filling is juicy.

Third is Steamed Szechuan Xiao Long Bao @ S$6.86. Paradise Dynasty has a range of 8 different Xiao Long Bao flavours, indicated by their different Dumpling skin colour. There’s a hint of Szechuan flavour in these Xiao Long Bao, nothing too overpowering, unlike the powerful 1st dish. This is nice too.

Last but not least, Paradise Dynasty’s Spicy Szechuan Crispy Chicken @S$8.40. Everybody loves deep fried chicken right? This dish dish is pretty good. Crispy/crunchy with that Szechuan punch.

I have to say though, this photo is from our 1st visit. A lot of chicken right? On our subsequent visits, the quantity of chicken and dried chilli swapped aka less chicken. Well, it’s disappointing. I hope this doesn’t hold true when the promotion ceases and we’re paying full retail price for it.

PS: Leave the Poached Sliced Fish in Szechuan Chilli Oil (四川水煮鱼) till the end aka eat it last. Otherwise you won’t be able to taste anything on the other dishes cause it’s so spicy. You’ve been warned 😀

Cheap & Good Prawn Noodles in Pasir Panjang

Category : Local Singapore Food

Seeing that the weather is very cooling today, after the morning rain, we decided to walk the distance to the delicious pork ribs prawn noodles stall – 肥仔排骨虾面. I don’t have the exact address of the pork ribs prawn noodles stall so I’ll just have to do my best to describe it.

The pork ribs prawn noodles stall in Pasir Panjang is housed in the coffeeshop at the cross junction of Pepys Rd & West Coast Highway. It’s beside the Golden Agri Plaze, opposite the Currency House. There’s a little URA coupon carpark in front of the coffeeshop if you drive.

肥仔排骨虾面 is one of the best pork ribs prawn noodles I’ve eaten so far. Its soup base is thick and flavourful, very important. Their big prawns are very fresh and fleshy. Like my colleague says “The texture in the middle of the prawn doesn’t gets sand-y.” It’s tender & juicy all the way.

The chilli is just nice & the boss uses pork lard which adds the extra oomph to the flavour. Bean sprouts & fried onions are also included so if you don’t like them, do remember to mention to exclude.

The challenge of going to肥仔排骨虾面 for lunch is that they cater to the morning crowd. In other words, they tend to run out of prawns and/or the different noodles towards lunchtime. And they are usually sold out around 1pm. So we have to set off at 11am to ensure that we get to eat something.

Like today, they’ve run out of pork ribs and the “normal” prawns. They also don’t have the white flat noodles (guo tiao) that I like. So we ended up eating big prawn yellow noodles at $6 a bowl.

No complains there as it’s the 1st time I’ve gotten to eat PRAWN noodles ever since I was introduced to this place by my junior more than a year ago. It has always been pork ribs noodles. Everytime I patronise the stall, the 1st thing they say is “We’ve run out of prawns, is pork ribs ok?”

So, if you happen to work in Pasir Panjang, 肥仔排骨虾面 is a must eat!! Just remember to be early.

They are opened for breakfast & early lunch and closed on Sundays.

Peony Jade’s Premium Ala Carte Buffet

Category : Buffet, Chinese

I’ve always enjoy hanging out with the girls. I can be my crazy self & we’ll just chit chat, laugh & maybe whine a little to loosen up as we catch up with each other over great food.

We’ve grown to be really great friends over the years and I’m truly blessed to have known such wonderful folks with big hearts. Plus we always make it a point to keep in touch and hang out as much as we can.

This time round we’ve decided to try out Peony Jade’s Premium Ala Carte Buffet which has a 1 for 1 special promotion. The promotion is until the end of April 2013 for Mondays to Thursdays. Excluding Eve of Pubic Holiday and of course Public Holiday itself.

The selection of food is pretty comprehensive and we can order food items that we like repeatedly, except for the first 5 premium items stated in the menu.

The quality of the food is not compromised even though it’s a buffet. Every dish is substantial and tastes really good! The prawns are really fresh and the Shark’s Fin Soup is filled with a lot of good stuff! We liked every dish except for “Sliced Pork in Szechuan Style” & “Stir-fried Sakura Chicken with Basil and Golden Garlic”.

I have to mention Peony Jade’s service as well. We are mainly served by a young male server who was really humorous and attentive. Our plates are changed regularly and he’ll crack jokes with us as we debated about the “evidence” of having eaten a dish e.g. the prawns or crab shells.

What a perfect evening. We’ve all concluded that the buffet is definitely great value for money! In fact, I’ve already started to ask other groups of friends to come to Peony Jade for this amazing 1 for 1 Ala Carte Buffet 🙂

Nicholas & Claudia Wedding at Hilton Orchard

Category : Love, Fun & Joy, Wedding

Nicholas. An ex-colleague and a good friend.

We’ve known each other for 8 years and counting.

A very private person. And I emphasize VERY PRIVATE 🙂

Never got a chance to see who his significant other is, until today. His wedding day.

Here are some photos from the evening and a simple video stitching together the brief moments I managed to catch on camera.

Too bad I didn’t capture the morning highlights. The sporting brothers doing the lift segment of the gangnam style really leaves an impression *thumbs up*

Thank You Ladies

Category : Love, Fun & Joy

It was a day of hot sun & fierce rains. Hot sun is nothing new as everyone knows Singapore as the sunny garden island. The shocker is the rain that afternoon. It was almost torrential! Visibility of the buildings outside the window drops to almost zero as thunder echoed through the sky continuously.

In fact I thought that there were fireworks being released and I went to check it out at the window. Many of my colleagues also expressed their amazement at “the window”, saying they have never seen much massive rainfall before. Heehee…

And it was on this dramatic day that I was presented with my very first birthday present of the year by my dear friends from Income. It was a very thoughtful and lovely present targeted at my pain point. My face 😛

I’m very touched and thankful for having such wonderful friends who remembers. Thank you gals! I really appreciate it 🙂

Thank you!
