(Closed) Here & There Restaurant @ Chijmes

Category : Modern Asian

Chijmes @ Cityhall has undergone quite a bit of renovation since my last visit. Walls were replaced with grills and shops were replaced by restaurants.

There is also a whole lot more Japanese restaurants in Chijmes but my favourite one, Japanese Dining SUN at Chijmes, has long ceased operation. Their set lunches were absolutely delicious and very value for money. Sad~

Enough reminiscence. Today, we’re here to try the food at Here & There Restaurant @ Chijmes. Here & There refers to Dine Here (Left) & Drink There (Right).

After being seated, we were handed an iPad for ordering. High Tech.

Since it’s our first time visiting Here & There, we were unsure of what to order and went with the Executive Set Lunch.

Coincidentally all of us ordered the same main course, Pan-Roasted Miso Salmon. But we have 2 different starters.

I had the Smoked Duck Salad which is pretty nice. The Duck slices are nicely seasoned and not overly salty. They’re not tough either.

However I didn’t like the arugula. I wished there was more dressing to cover the natural bitterness of arugula (to me at least).

When I saw the Prawn & Guacamole, it’s different from what I had imagined it to be. Like the Smoked Duck Salad, it’s very nicely plated and there’re four plump prawns with a generous serving of guacamole that’s “very avocado”. Nice~

Side Story
When the starters were served, we can see that extra attention has been paid to the food presentation. This reminded us of Onaka Restaurant & Wine Bar @ ARC & its tiny portions. Luckily, Here & There’s Pan-Roasted Miso Salmon isn’t as small. Phew~

Back to Here & There’s Main. I like Here & There’s concept of having 2 different sauces, Ginger Emulsion & Pumpkin Puree, in their Pan-Roasted Miso Salmon. Within the same dish, I can have 2 different experiences. Personally I like both and prefer the Pumpkin Puree sauce. The salmon skin is also nice & crispy.

However, there is 1 thing I dislike. Personally I prefer my salmon to be slightly raw, like Skyve Wine Bistro @ Winstedt Rd’s Norwegian Salmon Fillet. Here & There’s Pan-Roasted Miso Salmon is fully cooked. This results in very dry texture. I have to chew longer and harder haha…Of course this is a personal preference 🙂

We would have gone on to our dessert, Crème Caramel BUT we noticed that all the other patrons around us are having Kushiyaki Sticks! Are we missing something?

Here & There’s server & chef kindly acceded to our request to change our Executive Set Lunch from 3 to 2 course and we ordered Set Lunch D – Pork Lovers for sharing.

How not to drool over this? Great presentation (as usual) and it comes with miso soup & rice. Definitely filling. No wonder it’s popular. Amongst the flavours I tried, Shiitake & Asparagus win hands down. Yum~

And for tea lovers out there, I LOVE Here & There’s Earl Grey Tea that comes with the Executive Set Lunch. I wonder if they are really Gryphon Tea Company’s?

PS: A server shared that Here & There’s Kushiyaki Sticks Set Lunch are popular amongst lunch goers. Do note that they are only available on weekdays from noon to 2pm.

Seoul Restaurant Korean Charcoal BBQ Buffet @ Regent Hotel

Category : Buffet, Korean

We’ve heard praises of Seoul Restaurant from a friend who’s been asking us to try the food there since like almost forever hahaha…okay, that’s abit over.

Seoul Restaurant is also known the Regent Hotel Korean BBQ amongst us. So if you’ve heard about Regent Hotel Korean BBQ, this is the one.

Well, today is the day. The only thing that’s missing is…the person who jio-ed us to Seoul Restaurant…

I must say, Seoul Restaurant has a very good range of food for their buffet that is not limited to meat only. This is very different from the other Korean BBQ buffets I’ve tried.

Besides Beef, Pork & Chicken meats, Seoul Restaurant also offers Korean dishes like pancakes, stews & noodles. This is good for folks who go in bigger groups.

More things to try, with the option to alternate between Korean BBQ Meat, free-flow side dishes & Korean main dishes.

As there’re only 3 of us, we focused mainly on the meats. For beef, my friends had B3 – Yangnyeom Galbisal – Marinated Beef Boneless Short Rib in Seasoned Soy Sauce & B4 – Galbisal – Boneless Beef Short Rib. Comments are B3 is very tender while another generally prefers seasoned meat.

For Pork, we had 1 of everything. I quite like P1 – Samgyeopsal – Sliced Pork Belly. It’s nice both by itself and with either the salt & pepper dip or the soy bean paste.

This is also the 1st meat we grilled so I’m not sure if this verdict is skewed as we were quite stuffed towards the end and most of the seasoned meat tasted almost the same, sweet.

We had both the chicken dishes and we preferred C1 – Maewun Chicken – Marinated Chicken in Hot & Spicy Sauce over C2 – Sunhan Chicken – Marinated Chicken in Seasoned Soy Sauce. By the way, C1 is neither hot nor spicy.

Besides meat we had A3 – Haemul-pajeon – Korean Pancake made with Spring Onion, finely chopped squid & prawn and R1 – Kimchi-jjigae – Spicy Stew made with Ripened Kimchi, Pork and beancurd.

Both dishes were okay, a change from the sweet meats. For A3 – Haemul-pajeon, hands down, Joo Mak @ Beauty World is the best I’ve had so far. Plus Seoul Restaurant doesn’t provide the Hae Mul Pa Jeon dipping sauce

After our experience @ Seoul Restaurant, our conclusion is we most probably won’t revisit as we are small eaters. We most probably aren’t eating our money worth. Plus the meat all tasted the same towards the end, sweet. If we’re just talking about meat, I’ll prefer Ssikkek Korean Grill BBQ Buffet Restaurant.

While we were chatting about our lunch, it dawned on us that we’re missing the washed vegetables, raw garlic (ordered & never arrived) and sliced green chilli typically used to wrap the grilled meat in Korean BBQ Restaurants. This most probably would have made a difference in our dining experience.

I later understand that the vegetables + green chilli can be ordered separately from Seoul Restaurant’s A La Carte Menu aka not included in their Korean BBQ Buffet Menu. And it’s not refillable/free flow.

PS: The friend who jio-ed us went for Seoul Restaurant’s BBQ Buffet Dinner on the following day instead. According to him the side dishes were different. There were Pancakes, Kimchi, Octopus/Cuttlefish Slices (Dried), Seaweed, Salad & Sliced Vegetables in Red sauce. And he says that Beef is still the best.

I am a Singer 3 (我是歌手3) Moving Performances

Category : Songs

I watched this singing competition where established professional singers pit themselves against one another only because Kit Chan (陈洁仪) participated.

I must say that I am a Singer Season 3 (我是歌手第三季) has very good vocalists. Some who moved me deeply with their songs.

I absolutely adore Kit Chan. She really touched me with her songs. The emotions and connection she made is omg~

Here’s Kit Chan singing心动 in the 1st episode, originally performed by Shino Lin (林晓培). Kit Chan won praises from 韩红 with this. Our pride 🙂

And Kit Chan’s exit performance singing 心如刀割 in the 2nd episode, originally performed by Jacky Cheung (张学友)

I’m also deeply impressed by 韩红 who is able to deliver such an emotional performance, singing 天亮了, despite being sick. She won over her fellow singers who voted her Number 1 in their internal appraisal. Well deserved. *thumbs up*

And韩红’s 2nd performance singing梨花又开放 while strumming on the guitar. 梨花又开放 is adapted from 谭咏麟’s 迟来的春天.

Another singer who got to me is古巨基 singing 父亲 in the 2nd episode, originally performed by 筷子兄弟 (肖央、王太利).

古巨基’s performance in the 1st episode, singing 爱与诚, is also good. 2nd episode better 😉

Hope you enjoy these as much as I do.

(Closed) Onaka Restaurant & Wine Bar @ ARC

Personally the choices didn’t appeal to me so I went with ordering from Onaka Restaurant’s A La Carte Menu instead. That’s how I ended up ordering Onaka’s Pear and Salmon Main.

When I said I have mixed feelings it’s because, I enjoyed the dish. But the portion is so small. We were all shocked when the dish was served. Flabbergasted more like it.

The strip of salmon is so tiny. If you compare it against the tomato, it’s almost the same height and width as the cherry tomato. I know salmon is not cheap but for S$26++ I would have expected a bigger portion.

Size aside, I really like Onaka Restaurant’s delivery of the Salmon. The outer layer is all crusty, the skin is crispy yet the inside of the Salmon is completely raw. Thumbs up.

The fries-look-alike are actually pear strips. Very creative & yummy. The egg with pumpkin seeds is nice but The Missing Pan 62 Degrees Eggs Benedict is the best! 🙂

So all in all I enjoyed Onaka Restaurant’s Pear and Salmon Main but the portion is too small for S$26++ (at least to me).

Here’re what other folks around me had & their feedbacks:

Watermelon Sashimi  – Interesting. The watermelon are really sliced and textured like sashimi. The Daikon Tamari Dip is a little weird.

Chilled Cream of Asparagus – Average and it’s really cold

Tofu Avocado Salad – Best amongst the Starters. Both in terms of taste and portion.

Chicken Tikka Masala – Nice but portion is small.

Roasted Mushroom Soba – Nice

Chilli Crab Capellini – Popular choice but none from my table ordered this so sorry no photos. But feedback is it’s good. Portion is good too. Best amongst these 3 Mains.

Desserts received average ratings. Here’s Onaka Restaurant’s Coconut Panna Cotta & Matcha Gelato.

The Missing Pan @ Bt Timah

Category : Afternoon Tea, Bakery, Bistro, Breakfast

The Missing Pan @ Bt Timah serves the BEST Eggs Benedict! There, I’ve said it. And they’re seriously good. Best Eggs Benedict ever!

Though I guess I’ll have to try the Eggs Benedict at Skyve Wine Bistro @ Winstedt Rd & Wild Honey @ Scotts Square to know for sure…

Anyway, I got to know about The Missing Pan though a television programme which focuses on their 62 Degrees Eggs Benedict, saying that the owners went through many trial & errors before concluding that 62 degrees is the perfect temperature to make the perfect egg.

I couldn’t agree more!

So when a decision is made to have our team lunch at The Missing Pan @ Bt Timah, I’m overjoyed and ordered their 62 Degree Eggs Benedict With Smoked SalmonAvocado, seaweed crumbs on sourdough with in-house hollandaise without hesitation.

The Eggs Benedict texture is perfect. It’s soft and velvety yet not runny. I can mix/stir the egg yolk and egg white and it’ll still stay in its semi-liquid form. It doesn’t drip off my utensils.

I can enjoy the Eggs Benedict on its own or use it as a dip for the sourdough bread or combine it with the smoked salmon and they’re all good.

As you can see, the Eggs Benedict doesn’t collapse even after I split it open. And yes, the salmon is still raw on the inside, just the way I like it. What can I say? Delicious, 好吃, Sedap, 美味しい, 맛있어요!

My colleague had another version of The Missing Pan’s Eggs Benedict, 62 Degree Eggs Benedict With HamHoney grilled gammon ham, sauteed spinach and mushroom, buttered corn, in-house hollandaise. He wasn’t wowed by it, commenting that it’s okay.

I have to provide some background though, he doesn’t like corn. See all those corn under the hollandaise? And the honey grilled gammon ham was too little for him aka not enough meat. Plus he’s not a vegetables person. So he kind of regretted ordering this instead of a burger. But hey, he just wanted to try something different 😉

Next up, The Missing Pan’s French Toast SalpiconChicken, spinach and mushroom stuffed in French toast, banana nuggets, mixed berries, strawberry-smoked maple syrup. Doesn’t this look sweet? Nice presentation with fruits nicely arrange over a thick French Toast.

First impression, we all thought this was a dessert dish until she cut into the French Toast. Lo and behold, a secret stash of chicken and mushroom spilled out. She commented that the French Toast Salpicon is quite nice and very filling. By the way, the banana nuggets are goreng pisang (deep fried banana) 🙂

Our vegetarian colleague had the Reza YoghurtGreek yoghurt, cucumber, radish, granny smith, raisins, mint, homemade chewy granola stick. She commented that it was okay.

She wanted to order The Missing Pan’s Beetroot Quinoa Salad initially but we were informed that they ran out. The last I checked, Reza Yoghurt is no longer on The Missing Pan’s menu.

And lastly, we also ordered a set of The Missing Piece to share. Mostly out of curiosity as to what is it. These chocolate cookies-look-alike are pretty nice with an interesting texture. Like a honeycomb.
