Keng Eng Kee Seafood @ Bt Merah Lou Hei 2014

Category : Chinese

My second Chinese New Year Lou Hei session is with my comrades from university. It’s our once a year affair where we get to catch up with each other over Chinese New Year Dinner.

It’s always nice to have someone organize and take care of everything to keep everyone connected. It’s definitely no easy feat especially since we’re such a big group. So, very much appreciated and salute!

This year we’ve having our annual Chinese New Year Lou Hei at Keng Eng Kee Seafood (琼荣记海鲜) @ Bt Merah which is very near my work place! Nice!

Our reservation is at 7pm and we have to finish eating by 830pm to vacate the tables for the next seating. And all the tables at Keng Eng Kee Seafood were fully occupied that night. Such good business for a zhi char stall! Wow~

Anyway, do not expect much service at an overcrowded coffeeshop.

Well, I fully understand when dishes are rushed out onto the table because Chinese New Year is the super peak rush hour eating time of the year. But spilling things onto their customers with indifference? And the best part is I only knew it when I felt the heat from the sauce! Oh well…it’s a coffeeshop afterall…

Anyway, 言归正传. Food.

The first dish of the evening is of course the Yusheng which is average. But our volume is nowhere near average 😛

Also, check out the orange plates around the Yusheng. This is truly wisdom from a Lou Hei expert. We were told to put our plates around the Yusheng to catch any stray Yusheng that flew off from the main plate. What a great idea!

The food highlight of the evening for me is Keng Eng Kee Seafood’s signature dishes – Coffee Spare Ribs (咖啡排骨) & Hei Zor which is hokkien (I think) for虾枣. Yummy~

We also had Claypot Pig Liver which was quite nice. The liver was cooked just right. The photo I took was blur, so…sorry, no photo.

*Drumroll* The highlight for many people was the crabs. We had chilli crab and salted egg crab. I tried the chilli sauce which was average (plus they don’t have fried man tou which is a no-no for me) and had a salted egg crab claw, thanks to the generosity of my table mates 🙂

Being a lover of salted egg with anything person, I was disappointed with the lack of flavour aka no salted egg taste. There are folks who say that this lighter flavour enables us to taste the crab so it really boils down to individual preference. I for one, prefer to have the strong salted egg taste 😛

All in all it was an enjoyable evening with great company, and economical better than average zhi char Chinese New Year Dinner with a price tag of only S$22 per person whor~

Huat Ah!!

Peony Jade Clarke Quay Chinese New Year 2014

Category : Chinese

If you’re thinking of heading down to Peony Jade Restaurant for Chinese New Year Lunch or Dinner, it’s highly recommended to call in advance to make a reservation.

Peony Jade Keppel Club was fully booked for lunch and there was only a table left at Peony Jade Clarke Quay. Lucky Us!

You won’t find their usual Ala Carte or Dim Sum menu. Instead you’ll be greeted with Peony Jade’s Chinese New Year Menus. As Peony Jade’s Chinese New Year set menu was way out of our budget, we focused on their Ala Carte Menu instead.

I also didn’t get to lay eyes on their Chinese New Year set menu so…sorry, no photos. If I recall correctly, their set menu starts from S$98++ per pax? Please don’t quote me 😛 It’ll be better to ask them over the phone when you’re calling for a reservation.

Meanwhile, here’s Peony Jade Clarke Quay’s Chinese New Year 2014 Ala Carte Menu for your reference.

Now, Peony Jade Clarke Quay’s food.

I really enjoyed Peony Jade’s Yusheng. Definitely one of the better yushengs I’ve tasted. I love that they included orange peel & pomelo flesh which gives the yusheng a hint of savoury sour taste so that it doesn’t just taste sweet & sweet.

And I also must add that the lady serving us had really great service! She patiently took photos for us and even arranged the smoked duck bun nicely for us to take photos! I was really wow-ed by her!

Generally, I enjoyed Peony Jade Clarke Quay’s main dishes. One of my colleagues didn’t like the sauce that came with the smoked duck as it has the sandy texture which most probably is the coarse sugar? I did find that the smoked duck is a little salty on its own so I prefer to have it with the sweet sauce. Having it with the bun helps too 🙂

Since it’s Chinese New Year, we gotta have fatt choy (发菜) which sounds like the auspicious phrase – striking it rich (发财). Our vegetarian colleague tried fatt choy for the first time and enjoyed the texture. At first glance, the fatt choy really looked like mushrooms right? Really very 发 😀

Skip the desserts 😛

Note: As we have a vegetarian colleague with us so all of our dishes has been “modified” to exclude meat (except for the duck of course).

Welcome Back James @ Peony Jade Keppel Club

Category : Buffet, Chinese

Yeah! Another reason to gather and hang out 🙂 Even though the organising has been a little disorganised, no thanks to my watsapp for crashing and refusing to launch >_<

But we still came together before James flew off, thanks to everyone who actively coordinate with each other to make it work for an almost 包全场 experience! Woot~ I love my class!

I was lucky to be able to hitch a ride and was spared from walking the distance into Peony Jade @ Keppel Club where we came to enjoy the NTUC Plus 1 for 1 Promotion on Peony Jade’s Divine Ala-Carte Dinner Buffet.

This 1 for 1 Buffet Promotion is for Monday to Friday dinner in the months of June & July 2013, excluding eves and days of public holidays.

When we arrived, we were the 2nd group of customers in the entire restaurant and…we were also the last group of arriving diners.

Plus the 1st table subsequently moved into a room and as a result, it really feels like our class has reserved Peony Jade exclusively for our gathering =P

Similar to the Peony Jade’s Divine Ala-Carte Dinner Buffet I had at Clark Quay previously, there’s a list of 5 items which can only be ordered once.

I was a little disappointed that Shark’s Fin Soup was not amongst the items as it was really good the last time I had it.

And we weren’t impressed by the 5 items mainly because:

1. Atlantic Salmon Sashimi – The portion was very little. There were 5 of us and the portion served was more for at most 2 people.

2. Mini Buddha Jump Over the Wall – A friend commented that the Soup of the Day, which is watercress soup, is much better than this. To put things in perspective, he gave the thumbs up for the watercress soup.

3. Wok Tossed Chilli Crab – I didn’t really like the Chili Crab sauce. Friends who tried the crab said that the meat texture is not nice. Doesn’t seem to be very fresh.

4. Poached Fresh Prawns with Chinese Wine – Prawns are fresh. In fact all their prawn dishes are good. The only thing is we didn’t taste the Chinese Wine…

I very much prefer the limited 5 items from my previous dinner at Peony Jade @ Clark Quay.

The items we did enjoy very much, so much so that we kept ordering them over & over again were the “Sauteed Prawns with Wasabi Sauce & Caviar” from the seafood section & “Marinated Smoked Duck” from the appetizers section. These 2 dishes were the highlight of the dinner, for me at least. I simply LOVE the wasabi prawns!!

Another interesting moment was when a friend who arrived late places his order. “I’ll have 1 of everything from the seafood section except the last item”. We were like “We like your style”. Thumbs up

And then our table was filled with food…I no longer know which item is which so I think the other dish that I like could be the “Sauteed Prawns with Chilli Sauce”. It has the same texture as the wasabi prawns so I guess this could be it, judging from the name…

Deep Fried Prawns with Cereal” & “Fish Sliced ‘Thai’ Style” also received good feedback.

Besides eating & eating, I also learnt a few interesting things during the conversations we had over the food which I’ll share in future posts.

Once again, I took too many photos of the food and didn’t take any photo of the people. Frankly speaking, I also paiseh to take photos of people haha…since I myself don’t really like to take photos…so…we’ll see. Till next time 🙂

Peony Jade’s Premium Ala Carte Buffet

Category : Buffet, Chinese

I’ve always enjoy hanging out with the girls. I can be my crazy self & we’ll just chit chat, laugh & maybe whine a little to loosen up as we catch up with each other over great food.

We’ve grown to be really great friends over the years and I’m truly blessed to have known such wonderful folks with big hearts. Plus we always make it a point to keep in touch and hang out as much as we can.

This time round we’ve decided to try out Peony Jade’s Premium Ala Carte Buffet which has a 1 for 1 special promotion. The promotion is until the end of April 2013 for Mondays to Thursdays. Excluding Eve of Pubic Holiday and of course Public Holiday itself.

The selection of food is pretty comprehensive and we can order food items that we like repeatedly, except for the first 5 premium items stated in the menu.

The quality of the food is not compromised even though it’s a buffet. Every dish is substantial and tastes really good! The prawns are really fresh and the Shark’s Fin Soup is filled with a lot of good stuff! We liked every dish except for “Sliced Pork in Szechuan Style” & “Stir-fried Sakura Chicken with Basil and Golden Garlic”.

I have to mention Peony Jade’s service as well. We are mainly served by a young male server who was really humorous and attentive. Our plates are changed regularly and he’ll crack jokes with us as we debated about the “evidence” of having eaten a dish e.g. the prawns or crab shells.

What a perfect evening. We’ve all concluded that the buffet is definitely great value for money! In fact, I’ve already started to ask other groups of friends to come to Peony Jade for this amazing 1 for 1 Ala Carte Buffet 🙂
