Keng Eng Kee Seafood @ Bt Merah Lou Hei 2014

Category : Chinese

My second Chinese New Year Lou Hei session is with my comrades from university. It’s our once a year affair where we get to catch up with each other over Chinese New Year Dinner.

It’s always nice to have someone organize and take care of everything to keep everyone connected. It’s definitely no easy feat especially since we’re such a big group. So, very much appreciated and salute!

This year we’ve having our annual Chinese New Year Lou Hei at Keng Eng Kee Seafood (琼荣记海鲜) @ Bt Merah which is very near my work place! Nice!

Our reservation is at 7pm and we have to finish eating by 830pm to vacate the tables for the next seating. And all the tables at Keng Eng Kee Seafood were fully occupied that night. Such good business for a zhi char stall! Wow~

Anyway, do not expect much service at an overcrowded coffeeshop.

Well, I fully understand when dishes are rushed out onto the table because Chinese New Year is the super peak rush hour eating time of the year. But spilling things onto their customers with indifference? And the best part is I only knew it when I felt the heat from the sauce! Oh well…it’s a coffeeshop afterall…

Anyway, 言归正传. Food.

The first dish of the evening is of course the Yusheng which is average. But our volume is nowhere near average 😛

Also, check out the orange plates around the Yusheng. This is truly wisdom from a Lou Hei expert. We were told to put our plates around the Yusheng to catch any stray Yusheng that flew off from the main plate. What a great idea!

The food highlight of the evening for me is Keng Eng Kee Seafood’s signature dishes – Coffee Spare Ribs (咖啡排骨) & Hei Zor which is hokkien (I think) for虾枣. Yummy~

We also had Claypot Pig Liver which was quite nice. The liver was cooked just right. The photo I took was blur, so…sorry, no photo.

*Drumroll* The highlight for many people was the crabs. We had chilli crab and salted egg crab. I tried the chilli sauce which was average (plus they don’t have fried man tou which is a no-no for me) and had a salted egg crab claw, thanks to the generosity of my table mates 🙂

Being a lover of salted egg with anything person, I was disappointed with the lack of flavour aka no salted egg taste. There are folks who say that this lighter flavour enables us to taste the crab so it really boils down to individual preference. I for one, prefer to have the strong salted egg taste 😛

All in all it was an enjoyable evening with great company, and economical better than average zhi char Chinese New Year Dinner with a price tag of only S$22 per person whor~

Huat Ah!!

Long Beach Seafood Restaurant IMM Chinese New Year 2014 Menu

Category : Seafood

I was looking around at where to eat our Chinese New Year 2014 Gathering dinner and I remembered that I had a pretty good experience at Long Beach Seafood Restaurant IMM.

So I checked out their menu and took some photos to share with my friends on whether they’re ok with the place and thought why not just share with everyone 🙂

How I wish all the restaurants will upload their menus online so that it’s easier for us to choose where to eat.

Especially during this Chinese New Year season where most of the restaurants have special seasonal Chinese New Year menu and their usual Ala Carte menu will not be available

Anyway, here’s Long Beach Seafood Restaurant (IMM)’s Chinese New Year 2014 Menu for your reference 😉

Peony Jade Clarke Quay Chinese New Year 2014

Category : Chinese

If you’re thinking of heading down to Peony Jade Restaurant for Chinese New Year Lunch or Dinner, it’s highly recommended to call in advance to make a reservation.

Peony Jade Keppel Club was fully booked for lunch and there was only a table left at Peony Jade Clarke Quay. Lucky Us!

You won’t find their usual Ala Carte or Dim Sum menu. Instead you’ll be greeted with Peony Jade’s Chinese New Year Menus. As Peony Jade’s Chinese New Year set menu was way out of our budget, we focused on their Ala Carte Menu instead.

I also didn’t get to lay eyes on their Chinese New Year set menu so…sorry, no photos. If I recall correctly, their set menu starts from S$98++ per pax? Please don’t quote me 😛 It’ll be better to ask them over the phone when you’re calling for a reservation.

Meanwhile, here’s Peony Jade Clarke Quay’s Chinese New Year 2014 Ala Carte Menu for your reference.

Now, Peony Jade Clarke Quay’s food.

I really enjoyed Peony Jade’s Yusheng. Definitely one of the better yushengs I’ve tasted. I love that they included orange peel & pomelo flesh which gives the yusheng a hint of savoury sour taste so that it doesn’t just taste sweet & sweet.

And I also must add that the lady serving us had really great service! She patiently took photos for us and even arranged the smoked duck bun nicely for us to take photos! I was really wow-ed by her!

Generally, I enjoyed Peony Jade Clarke Quay’s main dishes. One of my colleagues didn’t like the sauce that came with the smoked duck as it has the sandy texture which most probably is the coarse sugar? I did find that the smoked duck is a little salty on its own so I prefer to have it with the sweet sauce. Having it with the bun helps too 🙂

Since it’s Chinese New Year, we gotta have fatt choy (发菜) which sounds like the auspicious phrase – striking it rich (发财). Our vegetarian colleague tried fatt choy for the first time and enjoyed the texture. At first glance, the fatt choy really looked like mushrooms right? Really very 发 😀

Skip the desserts 😛

Note: As we have a vegetarian colleague with us so all of our dishes has been “modified” to exclude meat (except for the duck of course).
