Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao @ Jurong Point

Category : Chinese

We used to frequent Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao all the time.

It was our default go-to dinner place until they pulled our favourite dishes from their menu a couple years back.

These were dishes we’ll order everytime we dine at Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao.

Hopeful that these dishes may be reinstated, we do pop by Crystal Jade once in a while to check out their menu.

When one of the dishes reappeared in their menu, we started returning to Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao albeit not as frequent as before.

This is Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao’s La Mian served with Double-boiled Chicken Soup @ S$10.80.

A server once shared with us that the Chicken Soup should be poured into the La Mian when she saw us seasoning the noodles with vinegar. We tried that and still prefer our La Mian with vinegar 🙂

It’s hard to go wrong with this dish. What’s not to like about a nicely done chicken soup?

Our only grouse is that the standard is not consistent across the different Crystal Jade branches. E.g. the double-boiled Chicken Soup at Jurong Point wasn’t as good as the one at Toa Payoh when we last dined at Crystal Jade.

The 2nd dish, which was my favourite La Mian, is Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao’s La Mian in Signature Pork Broth served with Deep-fried Pork Rib @ S$12.80.

It even has a star in the menu to indicate “Chef’s Recommendation”. So why was it removed in the 1st place? *Ponder*

Unfortunately, the higher the expectations, the harder the fall.

Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao 45

Firstly, it took quite a while to serve and I thought it was because they had to deep fry the pork rib. Alas, the pork rib wasn’t crispy or hot. It tasted/felt more like pre-fried pork rib left to stand since morning. I guess they most probably just forgot my order.

The Pork Broth soup was disappointing as well. It tasted like any other ordinary soup with noodles soaked in it.

Well, looking on the bright side, there’s nothing Crystal Jade’s chilli can’t save.

RWS Feng Shui Inn 风水廷

Category : RWS

I have always been under the impression that RWS Celebrity Chef Restaurants have 吓死人的价钱 aka sky-high prices 😛

And we always default to eating at RWS Malaysian Food Street when we’re at Resorts World Sentosa.

So my interest was piqued when I saw this poster while deciding where to eat at RWS.

More so because it was Cantonese cuisine.

RWS Feng Shui Inn 01

So here we are at RWS Feng Shui Inn 风水廷, located at Crockfords Tower 康乐福豪华酒店 Level G2.Right next to RWS VIP Casino.

First impression. Atas.

RWS Feng Shui Inn 02

Their service was very good. We saw that they adress some of their customers by name and we were allowed to study Feng Shui Inn’s menu at our own time. They were also very helpful in answering my numerous questions. Thanks 😀

We were pleasantly surprised that RWS Feng Shui Inn’s price point was not too bad…we had choices 😉

Their dim sum hours were over and we went ahead with their S$68++ per pax set dinner.

RWS Feng Shui Inn 09

First up is appetizers which is decent. Tea is not included in the set and is @ S$3.6 per pax.

RWS Feng Shui Inn 55

Our banquet style, 8 course set dinner is kicked off with Feng Shui Inn’s Cantonese Soy-braised Chicken served with Leeks. 风水廷香葱豉油鸡.

The seasoning & flavour is good though the chicken breast portion is a tad dry.

RWS Feng Shui Inn 56

And this is my favourite dish, Feng Shui Inn’s Trio Platter which includes Poached Scallops, Pan-fried Scallop Cake & Roasted Pork. 风水廷精选拼盘 (油泡带子,香煎带子饼,烧腩仔)

The Poached Scallop is fresh & bouncy. Pan-fried Scallop Cake is chewy with a nice texture. And the Roasted Pork is crispy. 2 of the Roasted Pork were better, with softer fats.

RWS Feng Shui Inn 58

I was slightly put off when I saw Feng Shui Inn’s Stir-fried Fresh Seasonal Vegetables with Cashew Nuts. 风水廷腰果炒时蔬. Asparagus. Not my type of vegetable.

And here I’m surprised. The asparagus wasn’t too bad and I quite enjoy its crunchiness without the strong taste I dislike. And who doesn’t like cashew nuts in their dishes 😀

RWS Feng Shui Inn 59

Feng Shui Inn’s Braised Bird’s Nest Soup with Crab Meat & Silken Beancurd 风水廷燕窝蟹肉白玉羹 is served warm with a pepper shaker.

Definitely not the usual Bird’s Nest with Rock Sugar. It was okay and I’m not really used to spreading pepper over warm bird’s nest 😛

RWS Feng Shui Inn 60

Feng Shui Inn’s Stir-fried Fresh Fish Fillets with Chef’s Special Sauce 风水廷干烧鲜鱼片’s fish is not bad too.

There’s a slightly crispiness to the fish and its sauce goes well with the Hor Fun.

RWS Feng Shui Inn 61

Feng Shui Inn’s Stir-fried Fresh Prawns with Hairy Gourds & Sliced Abalone with Abalone Gravy 风水廷鲍汁鲍鱼条节瓜炒虾球’s prawns are fresh and crunchy.

Its sauce, hairy gourds and sliced abalone goes well with the Hor Fun too.

RWS Feng Shui Inn 62

And for Feng Shui Inn’s Stir-Fried Hor Fun with Diced Vegetables & Egg White 风水廷菜粒蛋白炒河粉 which was mentioned twice earlier, it was a little bland.

The good thing is we have the sauces from the 2 dishes earlier to rescue it.

RWS Feng Shui Inn 63

Now stuffed to our throats, we have Feng Shui Inn’s Chilled Mango Sago Cream with Pomelo & Osmanthus. 风水廷桂花杨枝甘露.

It’s pretty good and has a unique taste to it there we weren’t able to pin point.

RWS Feng Shui Inn 64

Note: Feng Shui Inn’s dim sum comes in a set of 3 and they gear towards the traditional theme. Aka no fancicful dim sum as their target audience is the patrons of RWS VIP Casino where time is of the essence. So simplicity is beauty here 😉

Peony Jade Keppel Club Chinese New Year Ala Carte Dim Sum Buffet

Category : Buffet, Chinese, Dim Sum, Promotions

恭喜发财!新年快乐!Gong Xi Fa Cai! Happy Chinese New Year!

Are you all prepared for the feastings, gatherings and “interrogations”? 🙂

I definitely enjoy the feastings and gatherings and my 1st Chinese New Year themed event this year is lunch at Peony Jade @ Keppel Club.

Check out this awesome Chinese New Year display at Keppel Club. So festive~

The interior & stage of Peony Jade @ Keppel Club is pretty eye catching as well. I couldn’t resist making my way to the front to take this photo.

Despite having patronized Peony Jade countless times, this is my 1st Ala Carte Dim Sum Buffet @ Peony Jade Keppel Club.

I’ve been meaning to try Peony Jade’s Dim Sum for quite some time now so I’m ecstatic! Plus Peony Jade now has an amazing Chinese New Year Promotion where their Ala Carte Dim Sum Buffet includes Chinese New Year dishes as well.

1st dish of the meal is of course Peony Jade’s Prosperity Atlantic Salmon Lou Hei (Yusheng) with Caviar (发财三文鱼鱼子捞起). I’m not sure about the Caviar but I’m happy with the thick slices of salmon.

The server prepared the Yusheng for us coupled with auspicious greetings and it’s chopsticks action time! We grabbed our long chopsticks and start tossing the Yusheng while chanting our “wishes”. Though it’s mostly “Huat Ah”! 发啊

The portion of Yusheng is huge and we didn’t stop the server from pouring in the entire bowl of oil and sweet sauce so even though the 1st few mouthfuls are nice & crunchy, I quickly get tired of the sweetness of the dish.

So, word of advice, if you aren’t into sweet yusheng, limit the sweet sauce.

Another Chinese New Year dish is Peony Jade’s Hong Kong Style Deep Fried “Soon Hock” Fish with Light Soy Sauce (港式油浸笋壳). We love this dish. Thumbs up. It’s crispy on the outside and yet the fish meat beneath is still moist. Nice~

Back to the theme of Dim Sum Buffet. Yes, buffet. So, we courageously ordered every item in the Dim Sum section, except for one – Fried Raddish Cake with Beansprouts in XO Sauce.

Personally I love the Pan Fried Carrot Cake with Preserved Meat (腊味煎萝卜糕). It’s soft and moist with a nice flavour from the Preserved Meat. I’ll gladly have another serving if there’s space in my stomach 😛

Peony Jade’s Steamed Black Eye Bean Cake with Ham and Radish (蒸眉豆糕) is a different type of dim sum. Maybe I’ll coin it as creative? It’s lightly flavoured with an interesting texture. Maybe some gelatin was added? It’s nice as well.

Peony Jade’s Steamed Har Kau (水晶鲜虾铰) has a relatively thin & translucent skin with 2 juicy &chewy prawns within. Not bad as well.

What’s Har Kau without Siew Mai. Peony Jade’s Steamed Siew Mai aka Pork & Shrimp Dumpling (烧卖) is pretty decent and it’s good that there’s no fatty meat. At least not in the one I devoured.

Peony Jade’s Char Siew Chee Cheong Fun aka Rice Roll (叉烧肠粉) is quite good as well. The Chee Cheong Fun skin is soft and thin. I just wish there’s more char siew 😉

Another dish not commonly found in the category of Dim Sum is Peony Jade’s Hot & Sour Meat Dumpling (京川铰子). This dish has also gotten thumbs up from the table. It has a stimulating spicy flavour 😀

I quite like Peony Jade’s Steamed Beancurd Roll with Black Bean Sauce (豉汁鲜竹卷) as well.

The above 7 dishes are Dim Sum items I’ll order again.

Amongst the other dishes I’ve tried, I wasn’t wowed by Peony Jade’s Deep-Fried Dim Sum selection. And I dislike Peony Jade’s Baked Flaky ‘Cha Siew So’ topped with Chicken Floss (肉菘叉烧酥).

And out of the dishes I didn’t try, Steamed Custard and Salted Yolk Bao (香软奶皇流沙包) drew mixed reviews with comments that 黑社会’s version is nicer.

While Steamed Glutinous Rice in Lotus Leaf Parcel (荷香珍珠鸡) got a thumbs down.

All in all, it was still a nice meal with immense value. We definitely walked away with an immensely stuffed stomach.

Oh I almost forgot, skip the desserts 😉

Manhill Restaurant @ Pasir Panjang

Category : Chinese

I’ve been working in the Pasir Panjang area for more than 3 years and I’ve never stepped foot into Manhill Restaurant along Jln Pelepah. I wonder why…It was just never in my food map.

It was not until my ex-Team Leader went there for lunch with his new colleagues and shared this little gem with us that we promptly made a trip there for lunch.

And of course, deserving of the recommendation, the food (Tze Char style) is good. And reasonably priced.

Manhill Restaurant’s signature dish is their脱骨纸包鸡Chicken in Paper Bag (Boneless) which is a must have. Check out the juice oozing out of the chicken. It’s hard to stop at one!

Another excellent dish is their 蟹扒豆腐 – Crab Meat with Beancurd. The beancurd by itself may taste very ordinary but if you coupled it with the Crab Meat…”Oh my goodness!” Mmmmm~

A colleague had Manhill Restaurant’s Seafood Hor Fun and gave it the thumbs up. Even though it look small, it’s actually very filling.

As you can see, the Manhill Restaurant receipt is dated in August which is more than 2 months ago so my memory is abit fuzzy now. However, I’m sure the other 2 dishes we had, 排骨王 – Fried Pork Ribs in Chinese Style & 马来占炒瓮菜 – Chillies Kang Kong should be pretty good too. Why?

Because we kept saying that we need to return to Manhill Restaurant for lunch again and a colleague ordered the exact same dishes when she brought her hubby there 😉
