Café Mosaic @ Carlton Hotel Singapore

Category : Buffet, International, Promotions

I had my second Christmas buffet gathering at Café Mosaic @ Carlton Hotel Singapore.

This is the first time we’re having our annual Christmas dinner here and the good thing is, CafĂ© Mosaic is offering a credit card promotion of 1 dines free with 3 paying diners.

So we only have to pay $51.8 each. Good deal 😀

CafĂ© Mosaic’s Christmas offerings weren’t as good as 10@Claymore Pan Pacific Orchard Hotel. I was missing 10 @ Claymore’s Turkey Escalope while digging into CafĂ© Mosaic’s Roasted Turkey 😛

Anyway, one of Carlton Hotel’s buffet highlights is their Baby Lobster and here it is on my plate of seafood.

Armed with my fork and spoon, I started to work on my baby lobster and it was just too much effort for a little piece of meat that’s smaller than my fingernail. Next~

However, I have to say, I really enjoyed CafĂ© Mosaic’s Tuna Ceviche. It was all gone when I wanted to go back for more 🙁

In its place was Tomato with Cheese which was also awesome.

I was excited to see cereal prawn amongst CafĂ© Mosaic’s offerings alas it was not crispy. Most probably because it wasn’t kept warm? Its Fish with Soya Sauce was also quite tough too.

I took a bite out of my friends’ rojak and it was pretty good. Though I would prefer my “you tiao” heated beforehand for that extra crispiness. The option is there but she prefer hers soft so it’s just individual preference.

And last but not least, desserts 😀

CafĂ© Mosaic’s tiramisu was great! I would have taken more if I wasn’t so stuffed by now. I enjoyed their Raspberry Cake & Brownie too. The latter was very rich.

How can I forget Carlton Hotel’s Durian Pengat which saw my friend going back for more than a few times 😉 It was okay for me and personally, I still prefer Straits Cafe @ Rendezvous Hotel’s.

We had a great time stuffing ourselves with food while catching up with each other, laughing the evening away. We did notice that CafĂ© Mosaic’s surrounding was very loud as we had to raise our voices to make ourselves heard.

But the definitive moment was when my team lead commented that we couldn’t hear my manager’s laughter, which set us all laughing away. Hahaha~

Time for Christmas feasting again! 😀

Considering my age, thankfully there were only 2 hotel buffet feasting sessions during this Christmas season. Especially since I aspire to try everything at the buffet, as much as possible 😛

First stop, 10@Claymore at Pan Pacific Orchard Hotel.

Thanks to HSBC Credit Card Promotion, we enjoyed 25% off our total bill. This reduced 10@Claymore hotel buffet from S$42++ to S$31.5++. Sweet~

10@Claymore 03

And sweet it was. Wow wow wow at 10@Claymore’s desserts, all nicely decorated with Christmas ornaments. All screaming, “Eat me!”

10@Claymore 35

The shutterbug in me simply couldn’t resist giving each of them a close up shot 😀

10@Claymore 41

10@Claymore 42

I enjoyed most of Pan Pacific Hotel buffet’s desserts except for their shot glass puddings & their durian cake which reminds me of the long brown durian cake/stick/paste. Artificial.

Of course, I’m more demanding when it comes to durian being an unwavering bitter Mao Shan Wang (Mountain Cat) consumer. So my opinion could be biased, similar to my critique of Concorde Spices CafĂ© Peranakan Buffet’s Otah.

10@Claymore 39

There were also feedbacks that the yellow & brown layered cake was very sour. It is indeed pretty sour and I kind of enjoyed the slightly torturous sourly kick 😛

10@Claymore 36

Being a tea-lover, Pan Pacific Orchard Hotel really won me over with their Artisan Selection of Gryphon Tea at its buffet. How I wish I could try them all!

10@Claymore 49

I’m usually underwhelmed by hotel buffets’ Christmas seasonal dishes. Hats off to 10@Claymore for winning me over!

For the 1st time ever, I helped myself to a 2nd serving of Christmas Honey Baked Ham!

10@Claymore 09

10@Claymore also has a Festive Season Plates of Pleasure Menu for us to order (repeatedly).

10@Claymore 50

This is the 1st time I enjoyed my Turkey. Their deep fried Turkey Escalope won thumbs up from around the table. Yummy! If only I have space for another serving 🙁

10@Claymore 53

Other dishes I enjoyed were 10@Claymore’s Baked Beer Drumlet & Seared Salmon with Pesto Cream Sauce. Especially the Salmon.

10@Claymore 10

10@Claymore 11

Needless to say, all of us enjoyed our team lunch at 10@Claymore. Their service was also impeccable. We were well taken care of with just the right degree/amount of attention. Their chef even posed for me when he spotted me taking photos 😀

10@Claymore 30

Thanks Pan Pacific Orchard Hotel for the great meal, my teammate for organising and everyone for the great company! 😉

Oh, for sashimi lovers, 10@Claymore has both salmon and salmon tummy sashimi.

Joo Mak @ Beauty World Menu

Category : Korean

It’s been a looong while since I’ve been to my favourite Korean Restaurant, Joo Mak @ Beauty World.

Beauty World hasn’t been such an accessible place for my friends though we really love Joo Mak’s authentic Korean food.

Like their super delicious military soup (Budae Jjigae), crispy fried chicken (Yangnyeom Tongdak) and seafood pancake (Hae Mul Pa Jeon).

The best ever!

Unable to help myself, I find myself wandering to the front of Joo Mak when I was visiting Beauty World for dinner.

Sadly it was closed for the day due to some repair works.

Of course this also presented me with the opportunity to capture photos of Joo Mak’s latest Menu to share with my fellow Korean food loving kakis 😀

And for fans of Joo Mak @ Beauty World and all Koran food lovers out there too 😉

Japanese Bak Chor Mee – Ah Hoe Mee Pok @ Clementi

Category : Local Singapore Food

Nested in a quiet little coffee shop @ Blk 713 Clementi West Street 2 is a mee pok stall.

Yes, you may say “Mee Pok only what, what’s so special?”

nothing much I suppose, just that this very local Singaporean dish is being cooked and served by Japanese.

So explains the title, Japanese Bak Chor Mee 😉

Because Ah Hoe Mee Pok is dished out by Japanese aka non local, their mee pok is not exactly the same as the ones we’re used to having.

Ah Hoe Mee Pok @ Clementi 1

I can’t really pinpoint exactly what, though the 1st thing that struck me was that there’s no vinegar. So their mee pok doesn’t have the sourish vinegar punch.

And yes, I do love my mee pok with extra vinegar. So I’m a biased critic when it comes to missing vinegar. I guess that’s why I find Ah Hoe Mee Pok Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle @ S$4 a little sweet.

Ah Hoe Mee Pok @ Clementi 2

But then, all is not lost. Ah Hoe Mee Pok texture is spot on in its elasticity and chewiness. Aka Q-ness is just right.

The mushrooms are tender and well seasoned though their meatballs are a little tough.

I like their soup too.

What sets Ah Hoe Mee Pok aside is also its addition of abalone slices to its noodles. Their abalone slices are sweet and chewy without entering the rubbery state, which is common when it comes to abalone.

Ah Hoe Mee Pok @ Clementi 3

Final verdict, I don’t mind having Ah Hoe Mee Pok once in a while for a change. Maybe I could also try their other dishes too, if I (ever) get into the mood of shelling them

Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao @ Jurong Point

Category : Chinese

We used to frequent Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao all the time.

It was our default go-to dinner place until they pulled our favourite dishes from their menu a couple years back.

These were dishes we’ll order everytime we dine at Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao.

Hopeful that these dishes may be reinstated, we do pop by Crystal Jade once in a while to check out their menu.

When one of the dishes reappeared in their menu, we started returning to Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao albeit not as frequent as before.

This is Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao’s La Mian served with Double-boiled Chicken Soup @ S$10.80.

A server once shared with us that the Chicken Soup should be poured into the La Mian when she saw us seasoning the noodles with vinegar. We tried that and still prefer our La Mian with vinegar 🙂

Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao 43

It’s hard to go wrong with this dish. What’s not to like about a nicely done chicken soup?

Our only grouse is that the standard is not consistent across the different Crystal Jade branches. E.g. the double-boiled Chicken Soup at Jurong Point wasn’t as good as the one at Toa Payoh when we last dined at Crystal Jade.

The 2nd dish, which was my favourite La Mian, is Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao’s La Mian in Signature Pork Broth served with Deep-fried Pork Rib @ S$12.80.

It even has a star in the menu to indicate “Chef’s Recommendation”. So why was it removed in the 1st place? *Ponder*

Unfortunately, the higher the expectations, the harder the fall.

Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao 45

Firstly, it took quite a while to serve and I thought it was because they had to deep fry the pork rib. Alas, the pork rib wasn’t crispy or hot. It tasted/felt more like pre-fried pork rib left to stand since morning. I guess they most probably just forgot my order.

The Pork Broth soup was disappointing as well. It tasted like any other ordinary soup with noodles soaked in it.

Well, looking on the bright side, there’s nothing Crystal Jade’s chilli can’t save.

Amara Singapore Hotel Wedding Banquet Dinner

Category : Love, Fun & Joy, Wedding

I had an awesome time at one of my closest friends’ wedding at Amara Singapore @ Tanjong Pagar.

Yes, I very buay paiseh (thick skinned) self-declare close to everyone in my class 😛

And I truly hold them close to my heart, having known them for almost 2 decades!

I’m very blessed to have been classmates & friends with such awesome people! Not forgetting their significant others too 😉

Before I begin, I absolutely have to say, congratulations once again to our newly wedded couple 😀

And now…the food ^_^

Well I must say, the food @ Amara Hotel’s Wedding Banquet Dinner is pretty good.

First up is Amara Five Treasure Platter (Lobster with Melon, Roasted Pork, Seafood Beancurd Roll, Braised Sichuan Chicken, Crispy Whitebait).

This is my favourite dish of the night. Every item is nice and there were raves going around for the Braised Sichuan Chicken.

Amara Singapore Hotel Wedding Banquet Dinner 05

Next is Double Boiled Cordyceps, Hashima & Chicken Soup. This is one of the thickest, if not the thickest, chicken soup I’ve ever had.

The intense taste of the Chinese Herbs hit home right from the 1st spoon. This is a great dish for folks who love herbal soup.

Amara Singapore Hotel Wedding Banquet Dinner 07

Amara Singapore Hotel Wedding Banquet Dinner 08

Our fish of the night is Steamed Soon Hock in Teochew Style. The flavor is just nice and the fish is fresh and tender.

Amara Singapore Hotel Wedding Banquet Dinner 09

Next up is Stir Fried Scallops & Prawns with Golden Basket. The prawn is bouncy though the scallop is a little too chewy for my liking.

Amara Singapore Hotel Wedding Banquet Dinner 10

And this is something I didn’t expect. Steamed Duck with Eight Treasures.

From the onset, I thought that the duck meat will be very tough. Instead it was very tender & juicy. Thumbs up.

There was a comment that the duck from Dian Xiao Er is better though 🙂

Amara Singapore Hotel Wedding Banquet Dinner 11

And for our greens, Braised Baby Abalone with Bai Ling Mushroom & Spinach.

The Baby Abalone was done just nice, not overly chewy. A good choice with the Bai Ling Mushroom, instead of the usual oyster mushroom. Nice texture.

Amara Singapore Hotel Wedding Banquet Dinner 12

Next on the menu, Seafood Rice wrapped in Lotus Leaves.

Amara Singapore Hotel Wedding Banquet Dinner 13

And to wrap things up, it’s a 1st for me having Bird’s Nest with Aloe Vera for dessert. This is served warm and very unlike the usual bird’s nest with rock sugar.

Amara Singapore Hotel Wedding Banquet Dinner 14

Everything was distributed and served individually, other than the 1st dish. The server even kindly asked if I would like to take a picture beforehand. Great service!

Lovely couple, awesome company, good food & great service makes this an amazing evening 🙂

Kuvo Ambrosia & Elixirs @ Orchard Shopping Centre

Category : Afternoon Tea, European, French, Modern Asian, Seafood, Western

The food & ambience at Kuvo @ Orchard Shopping Centre is amazing!

Kuvo is a lifestyle concept by TCC and its secret location is on the 2nd floor of Orchard Shopping Centre, where Lei Garden used to occupy.

Stepping into Kuvo is like entering into a different world, away from the bustling crowd of Orchard road and old façade of Orchard Shopping Centre.

I would never have guess that there’s such an exquisite restaurant here if not for the recommendation of my old friend 😀

Kuvo @ Orchard Shopping Centre 06

Kuvo @ Orchard Shopping Centre 15

Kuvo @ Orchard Shopping Centre 16

We are here today to go through the wedding details of our groom-to-be while tucking into the gorgeous food of Kuvo by TCC.

I always enjoy myself in the company of my classmates and the good food @ Kuvo is just icing on the cake 🙂

Kuvo recently changed their menu from all day breakfast to small plates aka tapas. I love tapas!

And Kuvo’s tapas received raves from the class. They’re amazing albeit pricey.

Our evening started with Kuvo Portobello with Asparagus & Jalapeno @ S$12++. It’s sautĂ©ed portobello mushroom and green asparagus with jalapeno peppers and cherry tomato. Nicely seasoned, perfect texture.

Kuvo @ Orchard Shopping Centre 18

And as declared, this is the best Grilled Octopus @ S$16++ we’ve ever eaten. Kuvo’s sous-vide octopus leg with slow-cooked potato and smoked paprika is perfect.Nice flavour and perfect texture. Highly recommended.

Kuvo @ Orchard Shopping Centre 19

Here’s the dish of the night, Kuvo English Scotch Egg @ S$14 with melted edam cheese and red wine onion au jus (choice of wagyu beef, veal or tuna). The choice made here is wagyu beef & we had 2 orders of it! *Thumbs up*

I heard that this dish is not commonly available at restaurants because of the difficulty to achieve a nicely done egg with runny yolk within the meat. This is a must have when dining at Kuvo!

Kuvo @ Orchard Shopping Centre 20

Kuvo @ Orchard Shopping Centre 21

This is a very different Calamari @ S$16++ sautĂ©ed in garlic and extra virgin olive oil with pork charizo. This also received positive reviews while I’m partial to it.

Kuvo @ Orchard Shopping Centre 22

Another dish which we had 2 orders of is Kuvo Coffee Hot Wings @ S$14++ with baby carrot crudités and blue cheese dip.

Crispy, spicy, yummy with a nice twist of blue cheese dip. *Thumbs up*

Kuvo @ Orchard Shopping Centre 23

Amidst all the positive reviews, we were served Kuvo Atlantic Cod Meuniere @ S$20++ with sweet pea-crusted fresh cod medallion with pearl barley fricassee and citrus nutty-brown butter.

I’m not a fan of pea so nothing much to comment here, but the texture of the Atlantic Cod is
yes, you guessed it, perfect. Very nice 🙂

Kuvo @ Orchard Shopping Centre 24

As for carbs, we had Kuvo Slipper Lobster Laksa Lemak @ S$14++ with half slipper lobster and thick vermicelli in spicy assam coconut broth. Compared to the earlier dishes, this is a little lacklustre.

Kuvo @ Orchard Shopping Centre 25

Ending our lovely meal on a healthy note is Kuvo Caesar 63°C @ S$12++ with premium italian prosciutto, 63°C slow-cooked egg, housemade casesar dressing and delectable parmigiano-reggiano shaves, with added smoked salmon @ S$3++.

It’s not bad though its egg is nothing compared to The Missing Pan @ Bt Timah 62 Degree Eggs.

Kuvo @ Orchard Shopping Centre 28

All in all, I highly recommend Kuvo Ambrosia & Elixirs @ Orchard Shopping Centre *Thumbs up* 😉

Thailand Food – Fai Sor Kam @ Siam Paragon

Category : Thailand Bangkok

Walking around Siam Paragon and undecided on where to go for lunch, we found ourselves in front of Fai Sor Kam @ Siam Paragon.

Well, what caught our attention was Fai Sor Kam’s Special Lunch Sets banner.

Fai Sor Kam is an East meets West Restaurant, combining Thai & Italian Food.

Their Special Lunch Sets are going for THB150++ on Monday – Friday (Except Public Holidays) from 10:30am to 4:30pm.

And THB220++ on Monday – Friday from 4:31pm to 9:30pm, and Saturday, Sunday & Public Holiday from 10am to 9:30pm.

Fai Sor Kam 02

The Thai Herbal Drinks that came with the Special Lunch Sets were served while we were taking photos of the numerous lanterns hanging from Fai Sor Kam’s ceiling.

Here’s a few shots of me trying to be artistic 😛

Fai Sor Kam 38

Fai Sor Kam 39

As for Fai Sor Kam’s Thai Herbal Drinks: Lemongrass Juice and Roselle Juice, they weren’t very nice.

Fai Sor Kam 40

Back to our main courses, here’s our 1st set, Fai Sor Kam’s Deep-Fried Shrimps with Garlic, Fried Egg, Tofu Clear Soup and Jasmine Rice.

It was pretty average. Nothing to critic, and nothing to rave about.

Fai Sor Kam 41

But Fai Sor Kam’s Fried Shrimp Cakes in the 2nd set, Chicken Green Curry, Fried Shrimps Cake and Jasmine Rice were really good 😀
