Chui Huay Lim Teochew Cuisine 醉花林品潮轩 is different. It exudes a different kind of vibe from your usual Chinese restaurants with its unique location and dishes. Stepping into Chui Huay Lim Club 醉花林俱乐部 is like entering into a different world.
Sadly, it was raining that day. No opportunities to capture photos of its exterior. But I had the chance to go through their menu in detail, while waiting for its doors to open at 11:30am.
Everyone was served 1 round of tea to cleanse our palate before and after food was served. Just 1 mouthful in these koi-inspired teacups.
The 1st dish is progressing towards becoming a Chui Huay Lim favorite with its repeat appearance. This is a plate of 2 Chilled Roe Crab with Chinese Wine @ S$76.5 each 👍 Its flavors are well balanced. The chilled crab is fresh with a hint of Chinese wine. Disposable gloves are provided to help keep your hands clean while digging into this yummy dish.
Teochew Braised Platter (L) @ S$84 👎 is a dish that stayed on the table from the start to the end of the entire meal. I think there’s braised goose webs and wing which I don’t dare to try. The squid is okay, not too rubbery. But it’s just steamed, not braised. Braised pig trotter (pork belly) was average. The fats don’t melt in your mouth. Hence the best item on the platter is the braised big intestine. It’s really good, and the only delicious item in the platter.
The star of Chui Huay Lim Teochew Cuisine is its Crispy Fried Sea Cucumber and Shiitake Mushroom with Abalone Sauce @ S$38 👍👍 If you don’t like sea cucumber because of its gooey gelatin texture, you have to try this. And if you like sea cucumber, all the more you should have this dish. The sea cucumber surface is charred and crispy, while retaining its jelly-like interior. The sauce is perfectly addictive, best paired with some rice.
Chui Huay Lim’s Teochew Steamed Pomfret @ S$110.4 👍 is surprising good. The flavors complimented the freshness of the fish very well. I was surprised because Teochew-style fishes tend to be saltier due to the use of salted plum.
Shelled Prawns Fried with Golden Salted Egg (M) @ S$42 👍 is delicious. Everything’s nice with (the right amount of) salted egg. And even though there’s no shell, these prawns are perfectly crispy. You’ll find it hard to stop at just 1.
In continuation from our suckling pig adventure from Wah Lok Cantonese Restaurant 华乐酒家, we had Chui Huay Lim’s Teochew Roasted Suckling Pig Marinated with 5 Spices @ S$288 👍 I can’t really decide whether Chui Huay Lim or Wah Lok’s suckling pig is better. But they’re both definitely good.
Another awesome dish, which had us buying frozen scallops for home consumption is Chui Huay Lim’s Broccoli Stir Fried with Scallops (M) @ S$51 👍 Their scallops are amazingly tender and juicy. Best scallops ever!
The kway teow of Chui Huay Lim’s Wok Fried Kway Teow with Diced Kai Lan and Preserved Radish @ S$18 👍 is chewy with “wok hey”. The flavors are intense, especially if you have lots of preserved radish. I would say, spread out the preserved radish with each mouthful and you’ll be fine.
Wrapping it up with desserts, which are generally good, Chui Huay Lim’s Teochew Tau Suan with Gingko Nuts @ S$6.2 came highly recommended. When I 1st had it, there were too much orange peel 陈皮, overpowering the tau suan. Luckily that was a once-off incident. Because I love tau suan!
I love Yam Paste (Orh Nee) too and Chui Huay Lim has 2 variations: Yam Paste with Pumpkin and Gingko Nuts @ S$6.2 and Yam Paste with Hashima @ S$9.8.
Last but not least, Double-boiled Hashima with Red Dates and Lotus Seed (Cold) @ S$10.8.
